Hydra: Island in the Sound

Mnemosyne Projects x Old Carpet Factory

Commissioned by Ekaterina Juskowski for Mnemosyne Projects and composed by Angela Tisner during her Hydra Art Residency, Hydra: Island in the Sound is a limited-edition 7” vinyl EP that reimagines the sonic heritage of Hydra Island through six evocative tracks. Drawing from field recordings, interviews, and archival research, Tisner blends liturgical and popular song forms to craft a myth-infused soundscape rooted in the voices and rhythms of Hydra’s local community. The EP unfolds as a poetic promenade—an immersive musical journey that honors the island’s cultural memory while conjuring a timeless, imagined mythology. Accompanied by a lyrical foreword and track narratives by Alkistis Boutsioukou and Juskowski, and visually anchored by Holly Biörklund’s cover art inspired by an 1808 epitaphios, the project stands as a tribute to Hydra’s enduring spirit and the lives etched into its rugged terrain.

"Hydra never asks where you are from; she wants to hear about all the places you’ve been. Known to antiquity as Hydrea (Υδρέα), named for her gift of water, she emerged from the sea an untamed, unruly force—a molten surge that turned to stone in an instant, becoming barren, hard, unyielding. Her waters don’t invite, they dare. For those bold enough to leap, Hydra transforms—no longer an island, but a heartbeat unrestrained."

MARBLE RIDDLES is a rarefied collection of paintings on marble and precious stones. Each commissioned piece transforms mineral into mystery, inviting contemplation of marble’s ancient gravitas and its modern allure. In this collection, stone becomes a site of riddles—where history shimmers beneath pigment, and permanence meets poetic ambiguity.
