The Warp of Time Book / Old Carpet Factory

Object 2 / Mnhmh 01

$ 90

Hand-bound leporello style art book.

The Warp of Time traces historical and cultural evolution of Hydra Island in Greece, through the lens of one of its most storied landmarks—the Old Carpet Factory mansion. Built in the 18th century as a luxury estate, it was transformed into a carpet-weaving workshop in the early 20th century, and through time, has become a living archive of Hydra’s layered past.

Author Ekaterina Juskowski explores the island’s history and identity by chronicling the lives of the mansion’s extraordinary owners: Anastasios Tsamados, a naval hero of the Greek War of Independence; Nicholas Soutzoglou, a master carpet maker who reimagined the space as a workshop; American artist and architect John Lafarge; and aristocratic Bohemian artist Kristina Colloredo-Mansfeld, along with her son, music producer Stephan Colloredo-Mansfeld.

Through essays, archival materials, and visual storytelling, The Warp of Time reveals how a single building can embody the spirit of a place. Contributions from Egill Sæbjörnsson, Makis Malafekas, Lewis Lazar, Emma Louise, Margherita Chiarva, Bill Georgoussis, François Valenza, and Arturo + Bamboo enrich the narrative with artistic interpretations and photographic reflections.

Limited to 250 copies, this double-sided accordion-fold publication is housed in a slipcase printed with a reproduction of Margherita Chiarva’s “Bat and Bruce” (2015) and a quotation by the artist Clara Cerbian. The covers reproduce pages of a guest book signed by artists, musicians, and friends of the Old Carpet Factory mansion on Hydra island.

The Story of the Object

This book was published as part of "The Warp of Time" project that explores memory, heritage, and artistic expression in light of a century of shared history at the Old Carpet Factory, a historic 18th century mansion on the Island of Hydra in Greece, transformed into a carpet-weaving factory by the Soutzoglou family in the early twentieth century. Today the estate belongs to music producer and collector Stephan Colloredo - Mansfeld, who turned the property into a unique recording studio that became a creative refuge for artists seeking the simplicity and beauty of the past. Other objects in the MNHMH 01 series include an antique carpet woven on-site and two carpets by Marden that translate her intuitive watercolors inspired by her memories of Hydra.
