Photo: Artist

Max Gómez Canle (b. 1972, Buenos Aires, Argentina) is a painter whose work reexamines the traditions of landscape, still life, and classical representation through a contemporary lens. Drawing on a wide range of references from art history, literature, archaeology, and mythology, he creates meticulously constructed paintings in which fragments of different times and places converge, challenging linear notions of history and authorship.

Working across painting, drawing, sculpture, and installation, Gómez Canle explores the persistence of images and cultural memory, often treating the landscape as a site where historical narratives, fictions, and personal associations intersect. His practice is distinguished by a deep engagement with the legacy of European and Latin American painting, which he reinterprets through processes of citation, translation, and transformation.

Gómez Canle studied at the National School of Fine Arts Prilidiano Pueyrredón and has exhibited extensively in Argentina and internationally. His work has been presented at major museums, biennials, and institutions throughout Latin America, Europe, and the United States, and forms part of numerous public and private collections. Widely regarded as one of the leading figures of his generation, his practice continues to investigate the relationship between nature, culture, and the construction of historical memory.

PROJECTS

Group exhibition reconsiders Argentina’s surrealist artistic legacy from the unstable terrain of the contemporary world, displacing the human as its privileged subject and tracing agency across bodies, technologies, ecologies, matter, other forms of life, and invisible forces.
