Jorge Macchi (b. 1963, Buenos Aires, Argentina) is one of the leading figures of contemporary Latin American art, known for a multidisciplinary practice that spans installation, drawing, sculpture, photography, video, and sound. His work constructs visually arresting fictions that simultaneously captivate and destabilize perception, examining the ways images produce meaning while revealing their inherent fragility.

Drawing on references from literature, cinema, music, and art history, Macchi develops works from familiar objects, situations, and visual conventions that appear subtly displaced from their expected contexts. Through these minor alterations, he exposes the tensions between appearance and structure, certainty and ambiguity, inviting viewers to question the mechanisms through which reality is perceived and organized.

Central to his practice are concepts of translation, repetition, absence, and chance. Macchi frequently investigates the relationship between image, sound, space, and architecture, transforming ephemeral phenomena into material form and constructing poetic systems from accidents, coincidences, or overlooked details. The city also serves as a recurring subject throughout his work, appearing as both a physical environment and a psychological landscape shaped by memory, disappearance, and contingency.

His works often unfold as visual echoes, where doubles, transparencies, displacements, and subtle repetitions generate shifting layers of meaning. By transforming ordinary experiences into enigmatic propositions, Macchi creates spaces in which the familiar becomes strange and the boundaries between reality and fiction remain deliberately unresolved.

PROJECTS

Group exhibition reconsiders Argentina’s surrealist artistic legacy from the unstable terrain of the contemporary world, displacing the human as its privileged subject and tracing agency across bodies, technologies, ecologies, matter, other forms of life, and invisible forces.
