Mnemosyne Projects Presents

Hydra Island, Greece
June 20 - September 7, 2025

The storied past and singular essence of Hydra Island form the heart of Hydra: Island in the Sound project. Though largely absent from the grand narratives of Greek Antiquity, Hydra carves out a legacy all its own, one shaped by the interplay of water and stone, myth and memory. Once known as Hydrea (Υδρέα), its name derived from the life-giving wells that first nurtured its existence, the island turned into a a barren unyielding rock that now defines its landscape.

Through evocative art installations, thought-provoking exhibitions, and illuminating discussions, Mnemosyne Projects breathes new life into the mythology of the place. Each newly commissioned artwork created exclusively for the project becomes a vessel through which Hydra’s  spirit is reimagined, inviting us to witness the island’s metamorphosis in the language of art.

Objects

The Fountains series by artist Dimitrios Antonitsis transforms salvaged marble sinks into poetic philosophical sculptures shaped around the ideas of Lithos (stone), Lethe (oblivion), and Aletheia (truth). Each sink becomes a vessel of memory and meaning, inscribed with metaphysical resonance and elevated from utility to artwork. These pieces invite quiet reflection while honoring the nobility of Greek stone and the beauty of repurposed history.

Dimitrios Antonitsis, Fountain #1 “λίθος/λήθη”, 2025

Material: Dionysos/Pentelikon  marble
Price List
Driven by a deep passion for collecting discarded Greek marble sinks, Antonitsis turns his attention for the first time to the nobility of stone and the poetry of repurposed remnants. He transforms these salvaged objects into a conceptual language shaped around three ideas: Lithos (stone), Lethe (oblivion), and Aletheia (truth—literally, “unforgetfulness”). Through this triadic lens, each sink becomes a vessel for reflection, elevating the forgotten into artifacts of cultural memory and contemporary archaeology.

“I recognize the secret life of these derelict marble sinks. By restaging them within a conceptual play, I unveil their dormant narratives. The engraved words “Lithos/Lethe/Aletheia” become inscriptions of metaphysical resonance—where mythology, philosophy, and ecological awareness converge in dialogue. The primordial Titan Lithos meets Duchamp’s readymade and Heidegger’s reinterpretation of Aletheia as “unconcealment.” Together, these figures cohabit an imagined escape room, where each must confront Lethe, the force of Oblivion, as an existential trial."
