Fountains by Dimitrios Antonitsis

Mnemosyne Projects Presents

Hydra School Projects at Lyceum
Hydra Island, Greece
June 20 - September 7, 2025

Mnemosyne Projects presents a landmark collaboration with Greek artist Dimitrios Antonitsis, marking the first time he has worked with marble. In Fountains, Antonitsis was invited to explore marble not as monument, but as memory: repurposed, exhausted, and reawakened. Through this medium, Antonitsis engages the triad of Lithos (stone), Lethe (oblivion), and Aletheia (truth), crafting artworks that hold both philosophical resonance and environmental urgency.

Fountains by Dimitrios Antonitsis

The Fountains series by artist Dimitrios Antonitsis transforms salvaged marble sinks into meditative sculptures shaped by the triadic concepts of Lithos (stone), Lethe (oblivion), and Aletheia (truth—literally, “unforgetfulness”). Reclaimed from utility, each sink becomes a vessel of memory, an object inscribed with cultural dignity. These works invite quiet contemplation, honoring the nobility of Greek stone and the beauty of repurposed history.

Informed by an ancient view of truth as a form of remembering, the project echoes the Platonic notion that knowledge is not acquired but recovered. Each sculpture here is not just an object but an invocation, a silent call back to what was once known.

“I recognize the secret life of these derelict marble sinks. By restaging them within a conceptual play, I unveil their dormant narratives. The engraved words “Lithos/Lethe/Aletheia” become inscriptions of metaphysical resonance—where mythology, philosophy, and ecological awareness converge in dialogue. The primordial Titan Lithos meets Duchamp’s readymade and Heidegger’s reinterpretation of Aletheia as “unconcealment.” Together, these figures cohabit an imagined escape room, where each must confront Lethe, the force of Oblivion, as an existential trial."
