"You have to be metaphysically tuned to a very abstract way of thinking to click with [Hydra] island." - Dimirios Antonitsis

Dimitrios Antonitsis (b. Athens, 1966) is a multimedia artist whose body of work encompasses sculpture, photography and film. His projects navigate between the realm of familiar and unfamiliar, probing the fluidity and ambiguity of identity with a distinctive and thought-provoking approach.

Known for his innovative and boundary-defying experimentation with materials,  Antonitsis work invites audiences to reconsider the intricate relationships between objects, environments, and human interactions. His recent creations incorporate symbolic forms evocative of ancient artifacts, seamlessly bridging the past and the present. These works explore themes of memory, cultural continuity, and emotion, while questioning the linearity of human achievements. Antonitsis’s art cultivates a dialogue that reflects on historical narratives and reshapes our understanding of progress and identity.

STORY

In the series Fountains, Antonitsis reimagines the role of ordinary Greek basins— objects deeply embedded in the national identity—beyond their original function. For the first time, he introduces marble into his practice thus expanding the material vocabulary of his work. Commissioned by Mnemosyne Projects and curated by Tatiana Gecmen-Waldek and Ekaterina Juskowski, the series invites reflection on the afterlife of discarded everyday objects, subjected to the silent erosion of urban civilization. Antonitsis’ sculptural interventions elevate desolate artifacts into vessels of cultural legacy and transformation, pursuing his ongoing exploration of contemporary archaeology, a subtle yet haunting motif within his practice.

Artist's Statement
I recognize the secret life of these derelict marble sinks by restaging them within a conceptual play. The words “Lithos/Lethe/Aletheia” engraved on the stone surface transform their essence, intertwining mythology, philosophy, and environmental resilience into a harmonious dialogue. Here, the primordial Titan Lithos encounters Duchamp with his objet trouvé and Heidegger, who reinterpreted aletheia, the ancient Greek concept of truth, as ‘unconcealment’ or ‘unforgetfulness.’  Together, they become cooperative partners in an imagined escape room, where each must face Oblivion (Lethe) as an existential challenge.
