"Hydra-a foothold, thrust from the fathomless sea where eyes succumb to the infinite blue—seeking, yet never finding, the limits between the expanse of the depth below and heavens above."-Alkistis Boutsioukou (from Hydra: Island in the Sound)

Alkistis Boutsioukou (b. 1993, Athens) is an arts writer and multidisciplinary practitioner whose work explores the intersections of cultural production, environmental advocacy, and scientific literacy. With an academic background in chemistry and a professional trajectory spanning editorial work, cultural programming, and international education services, she brings a distinctive perspective to her writing—one that bridges analytical rigor with poetic inquiry.

Her practice is rooted in a belief in the transformative power of storytelling, public engagement, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Through thoughtful coordination and imaginative writing, she contributes to initiatives that foster environmental awareness and civic responsibility, aiming to create resonance across sectors and inspire lasting impact.

Boutsioukou’s ethnological research into her familial heritage has informed her recent work on the island of Hydra. Her project Hydra: Island in the Sound, commissioned by Mnemosyne Projects and developed during her Hydra Art Residency at the Old Carpet Factory, reflects her commitment to place-based narratives and the cultural memory embedded in landscape and sound.

STORY

Alkistis Boutsioukou co-authored a publication with Ekaterina Juskowski for Mnemosyne Projects, released as a limited-edition book accompanied by a 7″ EP vinyl record. The book features writing on Hydra Island’s cultural traditions and the lived experiences of its residents, weaving ethnographic insight with lyrical storytelling. Complementing the text, the vinyl EP includes six original tracks composed by Angela Tisner, blending field recordings, ambient textures, and orchestrated soundscapes to create a layered sonic mythology. Voices from the local community are interwoven with atmospheric compositions, conjuring scenes of daily life, ritual, and memory.
